Foods That Fight Cholesterol

When it comes to healthy eating, people should always be aware of what the different food that they eat may contain. They should also know what the effects of certain foods can have on their general health. One of the concerns that most people have with their eating habits is their cholesterol level. Here are some of those foods that might help people maintain a healthier level of cholesterol since they are known for their cholesterol lowering properties.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal contains high levels of soluble fiber. The fiber binds with the bile acids that are the precursor of the development of cholesterol in the body and help flush it out. It doesn’t necessarily matter what type of oatmeal that you eat. Those instant oatmeal versions are just as good for lowering cholesterol as the traditional, slow-cooking variety.

Red Wine

Having a glass of red wine can also help in lowering cholesterol levels. Red wine contains flavonols which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties that help lower cholesterol levels as well as prevent heart disease. But in the case of red wine, moderation is also important. A glass of red wine a day is ideal for women while a 2-glass limit for men is recommended. More than that and the benefits will no longer be as effective.

Soy Products

Soy products such as tofu, soymilk as well as natural soybeans, soy nuts and edamame can help in reducing the production of new cholesterol in the body. About 25 grams of soy protein per day is the ideal serving to follow.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish varieties like tuna, salmon and halibut are known to contain Omega-3 fatty acids, compounds considered as “good fats” that help lower blood cholesterol levels. People should at least add 1.5 to 3 grams of Omega-3 into their daily diet. That is about a 4-ounce piece of salmon. Fish oil supplements may also be good alternatives for getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids daily.
